studio 5 / tecapa in progress
category: La tierra de mi Madre
location/subject: El volcán Tecapa a.k.a La Laguna de Alegría
--
= more figure /ground | less figural
= a floating mass of land, earth being sucked
by the siren at the core of the lake, the crater
=how do you paint SOUND?
Sunday Studio / 4
spent the bulk of the day developing the space of this single panel & managed to finish the 'real' space while leaving a black 'blob' on the lower left. This 'blob' will eventually proliferate a fictitious space- an kind of imagined pervasion floating into the memory of an existing space. In my head, I picture a kind of Piranesi scaffold-ing sequence...let's wait for the paint to dry and then proceed from there.

Wednesday Studio / 3

Last class I was hell bent on [re]creating sacred spaces AND then inserting something or integrating something to pervert the space. My instructor, Glenn, thought it was interesting that I was using such a word since the spaces I was painting was nothing of the sort-but rather religious and beautiful. He went on about how he liked how the space leads you to the sky...but but but
my issue at hand is: how can I push my work forward? I find myself wanting to paint from memory or wanting to paint the memory of a space-but then I end up painting the space itself and nothing more. I am investigating - in search of something more than just the build up of sacred spaces...I need to uncover a deeper story.
During our seminar, our instructor tells us about two artists work without ever actually showing us the work itself. Their ideas were so sound that they can be conceptualized in conversation. Their figurative imagery is so theatrical that you could picture the work without ever having to see it. Because the idea is that impactful.
So I ask myself: how can I be impactful?
Do I need to add some figurative lace? Is this my act of perversion-pushing me to try to do something so different and foreign for myself that it scares me? provokes me? The spaces I am working on are indeed lovely, and special...but how can I extend their story further? What is it that I'm really trying to tell you and why do we need to look/care?

More Ruins / Antigua
- I am challenging myself to think : what makes these spaces Guatemala ? Is it even about Guatemala - but more about the sacred union between ruin and sky? Man and nature - discovering tranquility in a dead space or a space destroyed by nature - made by man / preserved in nature ...
Initially I wanted to paint something over that will create a layer of provocation - only I don't have a heartfelt reason to do so and i can't quite justify why I would taint my memory of this space.
Long story short : it's very trying for me to be clear with my intentions : my words do not match my painted execution - ugh.

Wednesday Studio / 1
Yesterday was my first session at SFAI adv. painting with Glenn Hirsch.
in our first session we had a warm up exercise using a limited palette:
brown, blue, white and black.
I saw this as an opportunity to work on some architectural spaces, particularly the church ruins in la Antigua, Guatemala. You can see more photographs that inspire this set in the Kollectiv magazine, vol. 1
